In short

As of September 2026 the list holds 40 companies and organisations in Iceland whose core work is artificial intelligence or machine learning. The largest group builds AI for one industry: GreenFish forecasts fishing grounds, Lucinity hunts money laundering for banks, PLAIO plans pharmaceutical supply chains and Jónsbók answers lawyers with citations.

Iceland's distinctive cluster is language technology for Icelandic: Miðeind, Tiro and Grammatek build translation, speech recognition and synthetic voices, and Almannarómur coordinates the national language-technology programmes. Research happens at CADIA at Reykjavik University, IIIM and the University of Iceland, while the data centres of atNorth, Borealis and Verne host AI workloads on renewable power.

Companies that want something built for them can turn to studios and consultancies such as DataLab, URRU.AI, DataDream and Svörum strax. Most of the list sits in the capital area; exceptions include Grammatek in Akranes and Euler in Hafnarfjörður.

How to choose an AI company

  1. Ask to see something in use.

Live projects say more than a pitch. Ask for links, not slides.

  2. Ask who owns the code and the data.

You should own both, and be able to change supplier without starting over.

  3. Get a price before you book a meeting.

If no number exists until after a long call sequence, that is an answer in itself.

  4. Ask where the data goes.

Which models are used, where they run, and how personal data is handled under GDPR.

  5. Start small.

One bounded project over two to four weeks tells you more about the partnership than a large contract.

How this list is made

A company or organisation is listed if it is headquartered or was founded in Iceland, states on its own website that AI or machine learning is the core of its product, service or research, and has a live website. Foreign companies with a sales office here are not counted.

Every entry was checked against the organisation’s own site. Descriptions are paraphrased by us, not copied. A founding year is given only where the company’s site or a public record states it.

This is not a ranking. Entries are alphabetical within each group, and the grouping is our judgement.

URRU.AI maintains the list and is on it, under Studios, consultancies and services. The same criteria apply to us as to everyone else.
